(SINGLE REVIEW) Ailee - Johnny
Who: Ailee
Genre: Jazz, Pop
Single: Johnny
Can Ailee ever really go wrong?
Answer: probably not.
While "Johnny" certainly isn't Ailee's most exciting song ever, there's a charm to it that you just don't get from many artists today. Ailee has done the pop and ballad genres, but she seems to have found her groove with jazzy pop. It takes a certain voice to do jazz, and she has it.
This new Ailee single goes out to all the Johnnys (Johnnies?) out there though. You know who you are! (Mostly because your name is Johnny.)
While I do like the song, I feel as though the song is a tad boring. I feel like I'm halfway through an album and have hit the filler songs. It's just a little too slow for a comeback that isn't a follow-up.
Having said that, the song really does sound well done, and I know this is a song that Ailee will be able to perform (probably easily) live. Maybe that's why I want it to be a little bit more of a complicated song; I'm so used to her power vocals that having a softer sounding song (though there are some solid vocalizations near the end) just doesn't seem very "Ailee-ish" to me.
The more I listen to it, the more the song itself grows on me, but I'm probably always going to wish that the song was a "hit you in the gut" sounding single. But I suppose Ailee can't only do those songs--she'd kill her vocal cords if she did, and if I'd have to choose between an Ailee that has a long career with a few slower singles and an Ailee that had all power-vocal driven songs that had a short career because she destroyed her vocal cords, I'd choose the former.
More Ailee for everyone!
