(SINGLE REVIEW) Chaeyeon - Obvious
Who: Chaeyeon
Genre: Pop, Dance
Tracklist:
1. 안봐도 비디오 (feat. 허인창)
안봐도 비디오 (feat. 허인창) [TITLE]: Holy saxophone, Batman! That was surprising, and by the time I recovered and managed to calm down the puppy that ran down a flight of stairs to investigate the noise, the song was already halfway over. And yet, I didn't feel like I missed anything. From what I could hear in my half-distracted state, it didn't change much. I felt like I was hearing the same few lines over and over again. On following listens, my suspicions were found to be correct. That being said, for a pop/dance track, it isn't bad. Yes, it's repetitive, but considering the genre, I'm not looking for ground-shattering musicality or originality. One of the major pluses going for the song in my opinion is the featuring rap, because it isn't awkward, and doesn't feel like an afterthought. I will say though, every time I play this song, my dog looks at my computer like its possessed.
Runway (feat. 가희): This is a song meant for a summer drive. At least until the rapping. Seriously, I was so close to starting to dance, and then the rapping started. Oh song, you could have been so great. Now, I do like Kahi, but she should not have been a part of this song. This song has such a breezy, warm feeling, and then her rap comes in, and you feel like everything has frozen over. After the rap ends, the song goes back to breezy as though nothing happened, and that almost makes it worse. At least acknowledge it somehow. I wonder if someone snuck it in without Chaeyeon noticing, because man, it is brutally awkward.
Overall: This single is okay. Not awful, but not great. Chaeyeon is talented, there's no denying that really, but she certainly could have (and has done) better. Maybe next time.
